India Climate Data
My blog statistics have revealed that many viewers have reached my site in search of climate data for Indian stations. The best way to get this information is to visit the official web site of the India Meteorological Department at www.imd.ernet.in or www.imd.gov.in, click on ‘Climate Normals’ and then click on the options in the sub-menu. Or you can directly go the page at http://www.imd.gov.in/section/climate/newdelhiweb.htm. Here you will find monthly climate data for 19 Indian stations: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Pune, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram. For each station, monthly means of daily maximum temperature, daily minimum temperature, total rainfall and number of rainy days, are given in the form of tables.

Dear Professor,
I am writing from UNEP in Nairobi, and we are doing a publication titled compendium on climate change. We have a report about the effects of climate change in India. We would need a temperature map, showing the temperature extremes, for example showing days when temperature was over 35 degrees celsius. Here’s a link to an example of what we are thinking of: http://climateprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/noaa-heat-waves.gif
And here’s a report about it: http://www.slideshare.net/GlobalChange.gov/globalchangegovus-impacts-summary-1550347?type=presentation
If you would like more information concerning our project, please do not hesitate to ask.
Thank you very much for your assistance,

Hello Sir,
I’m looking for historical snowfall data for India, either city-wise or district-wise. Is it available somewhere?

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have a small travel website. I have a lot of people asking questions about snow in places in Himalayas – what time does it snow usually, how heavy etc.
I wanted historical data so that I can get an idea of average snowfall for a particular date at a place and guide travelers accordingly. I looked out but wasn’t able to get this data on net anywhere.
Looking forward to your help on this.

Hello Sir,
I am an architecture student and doing a project on Palmyra house in Nandgaon in alibaug(Panvel) and wanted to know the prevailing wind patterns as described by wind roses over there.
My other questions were about the dominant features of the site’s climate and microclimate. What are the recommended passive environment design strategies for this climate?
and the passive environmental design strategies of the project. Were there any opportunities missed? What active systems supplement the passive elements?
Thanks,
Jigar

Dr.Rajiv Sharangpani said
Dear Sir,
How useful is monsoon prediction if it is not accurate enough to predict rainfall on MY piece of land? It appears to be impossible to predict that. General forecast that it will rain sporadically in western maharashtra has little meaning to me as a farmer.
Yours sincerely,
Dr.Rajiv C. Sharangpani
Prof R R Kelkar said
Dear Dr Sharangpani,
Your question has two aspects, philosophical and technical. If we could predict our future lives in every detail, by whatever means, we would become God. As human beings, we are subject to many limitations and constraints. At the same time, everyone wants to know the future, although it is not his hands. This is all paradoxical and can be frustrating.
As far the technical aspect is concerned, there are two types of situations. One in which the weather conditions over a widespread area are very similar. In such a situation it makes sense to say that it will rain over that area, and an individual farmer will benefit from that information because his farm lies within it. But there are times when the weather is not uniform over a region and it could differ from one farm to another. In that case the forecast may come true over some farms but not over others. It becomes more and more difficult to make good weather predictions as the area becomes smaller and the time period becomes longer.
What I would say is that weather predictions have to be considered along with other information and guidance available, including the farmer’s traditional knowledge and intuition and his deep understanding of local conditions.
Does this make sense to you? If not, write to me again.
Regards and best wishes,
R R Kelkar

Dear Maitreyee,
I believe you are a student and perhaps doing some research. You should visit a good library and look for a good book on the subject in the reference section. If you find a book on solar radiation that should be of help otherwise refer to a book on meteorology and see if it has a chapter on it. Good luck! This is all that I can do!
