PROF. R. R. KELKAR’S BLOG ON WEATHER AND CLIMATE

India Weather Data

My blog statistics have revealed that many viewers have reached my site in search of weather data for Indian stations. The best way to get this information is to visit the official web site of the India Meteorological Department at www.imd.ernet.in or www.imd.gov.in and then click on the locator map on the home page. Here you will find weather information for 20 Indian stations: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehra Dun, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Pune, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram. For each station, observations of maximum temperature, minimum temperature and 24-hour rainfall, departures from normal, times of sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset, and the local forecast, would be displayed.

To know about the weather at other Indian Stations, you have to click on ‘Current Weather Observations’ on the home page menu. Or you can directly open the page at http://www.imd.gov.in/section/nhac/dynamic/current.htm. Here you will get the latest data on temperature, relative humidity, mean sea level pressure, wind speed, wind direction and the type of current weather, as observed at 78 Indian stations, and updated every 3 hours.

    Dear Dr Chatterjee,

Thanks for visiting my blog. I would like to clarify that I do not provide any data through my blog. I am a retired person and I write about various topics in my blog that may be of interest to different people.

The India Meteorological Department is the official agency that provides meteorological data to users like you. However, mostly current data is available online. I suggest that you send an email to National Data Centre, IMD, Pune at ndc@imdpune.gov.in and let them know about what exactly you would like to have. I am sure that they would be able to help.

If you are interested in rainfall data alone, then I recommend the site Monsoon On Line which you can visit through the IITM web site http://www.iitm.ernet.in.

Regards and best of luck for your endeavour,

    R R Kelkar

Thank you for your advice in the revious instant.
    Yours faithfully

    Dear Sir

I would like to know if the temperature in Bangalore falls below 14.4 Degree C during winter. If so, for how many days (say in the last 10 years) and to what temperature. Require this data to assess the need of room heating.

    Regards
    Vasudev Murthy

    Dear Sir,

I have been looking for meteorology data including relative humidity, temperatures, wind speeds etc for Jaipur for few months in 2009 and was unable to find it on the website that you posted earlier. It would be great if I could get some help in this regard. If not Jaipur, any other region would also be fine.

    Thank You
    Pranav

Can you give me your full name and address and tell me what you are doing and what for you need this data? Are you a student or a professional? This information will help me to give you better advice on how to go about.

        Dear Sir,

I am Pranav Jampani doing my Master’s in Atmospheric Sciences in United States and am currently staying in Raleigh. I am doing a project on aerosol optical properties based on AERONET data as a part of course Advanced Physical Principles of Meteorology and wanted the data for my analysis. It would be great if you could help me in this regard

        Thank You
        Pranav

    Dear Professor,

As I mentioned earlier, I am trying to analyze the AERONET measurements data for Jaipur and Kanpur sites to correlate between Aerosol optical depth, angstrom exponent and water vapor. However, am planning to do beyond just observational analysis and wanted to ask for your suggestions. I am looking to identify a problem first and then go about it. It would be great if you could suggest few problems that I could work on dealing with aerosol optical depth.

    Thank You
    Pranav

    Dear Pranav,
Thanks for your clarifications. I would suggest that you visit the IMD web site at http://www.imd.gov.in. On the righat side of the web page there is a a green colored column. There you will find a heading “Data Store” If you click on the links below it you will find (a) names and addresses that you were looking for, and (b) what data are available in the archives and how you can get them.
    Best of luck!
    Kelkar
