India Weather Data
My blog statistics have revealed that many viewers have reached my site in search of weather data for Indian stations. The best way to get this information is to visit the official web site of the India Meteorological Department at www.imd.gov.in and then click on the locator map on the home page. For each station, observations of maximum temperature, minimum temperature and 24-hour rainfall, departures from normal, times of sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset, and the local forecast, would be displayed. The IMD web site offers online plenty of information of climatological as well as current interest.

Dear Prof. Kelkar
I am a Research Fellow in SAC-ISRO. My research requires the ‘Windrose diagrams’ for the metro cities (especially for Dehi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad ) to find the downwind regions of the cities. Can you please provide me some information about ‘from where I can get the data?’
Also I have a doubt regarding air quality data availability from IMD. For how long period it is available and what is the nature of data?
Kindly help me.
Thanks in advance.
(PS: This blog is really useful for researchers. Some of the previous posts really helped me to find some required data sources. I am grateful to you for that. Thank You Very Much..)

Dear Arya,
Thank you for visiting my site and for your words of appreciation.
Well, frankly speaking, since you are in SAC, you should directly approach IMD for all your data needs, since IMD and ISRO have such excellent institutional relationships.
Have you met the Director of Meteorological Centre, Ahmedabad, or talked to her about your requirements? I am sure she would help you.
Best wishes,

Sir,
This is Kousik from west bengal,India. From Last few days I am searching for some graphic data showing 24 hrs of temperature variation in graph starting from 00 hrs to 24 hrs for the most hottest day and place for India for the year 2012.I get some data from IMD as well as other sites but they don’t fulfill my requirement and I am now puzzled how I continue my R&D because this is the assingnment given to me by my Project Manager, basically this data is required to made a prototype(TRACTION CONVERTER UNIT FOR INDIAN RAILWAYS LOCOMOTIVES) and this data specifies the maximum operational temperature during day time in India for the locomotive.
Hope I will get the reply and the much needed help from your side.
Thanking You,
Best Regards,
Kousik
Apr 27, 2012 @ 07:25:01
Dear Kousik,
The best way to overcome your difficulty is to simulate a diurnal temperature graph. The maximum temperature is usually observed around 1430 hours and the minimum around 0730 hours local time. Using an extreme value of say 50 deg C for the maximum and a minimum of say 20 deg C you can yourself construct a smooth diurnal curve.

Dear Prof. Kelkar,
Could you please help me construct a very simple instrument for the measurement of wind speed? I have read somewhere of just a sheet of aluminium and the angle it makes to the vertical being a measure of wind speed.
Yours sincerely,
Kabir Jaithirtha
Mar 20, 2012 @ 08:17:06
Dear Kabir,
There are many internet sites such as http://www.fi.edu/weather/todo/todo.html which tell you how to construct simple weather instruments. However, much depends on what you want to do with them. If it is just your hobby, you can go ahead, but do not expect accurate data from such makeshift tools.

hello sir,
i am a student of B.ARCH and i need the solar intensity data as well as the wind rose chart for OOTACAMUND over last 25 years. i checked the imd website but it does not have a weather station here. could you please suggest me, from where to get these data.
regards

Feb 18, 2012 @ 05:28:06
Dear Vidhi,
Well, you cannot construct a wind rose if there is no wind data! But you have the following options:
(1) Instead of Ooty you can choose another station (for your case study) for which data is available
(2) Get data for stations around Ooty and interpolate
(3) Get data for a neighbouring station and use it for Ooty with some approximations

I am a Masters Student studying in IIT Delhi and i’m working on a project on net zero energy buildings through pre design optimization. I am looking for reliable data for delhi which gives hourly average temperature and humidity values for all 365 days of the year for determination of cooling load of the building. All Common sources list only monthly averages for the same.
Feb 06, 2012 @ 08:06:23

Respected Sir
we in central electricity regulatory commission want to get one year temp data for delhi for an electricity research paper but it was not available in aws site suggested by you. More data should be available in public domain else alternative mode like data on request may be provided as similar problem is being faced in wind forecasting where we recently introduced Scheduling of wind power based on forecasting. Your blogs are really inspiring Go with the wind was quite interesting . Thanks and regards
Feb 18, 2012 @ 14:37:28
Dear Vijay,
I retired from IMD eight years ago and do not speak for it. But it is really impossible to put all meteorological data for a country of India’s size on a web site as the volumes are prohibitively large. However, if data is not on a web site, it does not mean that it is not available. I suggest that you get in touch with IMD at an appropriate official level.
Thanks for your comment about my blog. Weather is an interesting subject, but many times we make it so boring!

Dear Sir,
I am a student doing my final year project on energy management simulation and integration of renewable resources such as solar and wind power.
I have been trying to find hourly wind speed data for Madhya Pradesh to match the hourly wind resource with the hourly load demand, but am limited by budget constraints.
Would you be able to suggest any sources I could get this data for free or at the lowest cost?
So far, the Jamgodrani wind farm offered the hourly wind speed data for 2006 @ 500USD, IMD seems to be offering it @ 565USD by my own calculations, and http://www.cwet.tn.nic.in/html/departments_ps.html is offering @ 316.6USD.

Dear Prashanta,
Since you are investigating long-term climate-agriculture relationships, you need long data series. You will find the agricultural data on the Ministry of Agriculture web site at http://agricoop.nic.in and the weather data on the IMD web sites at http://imd.gov.in and http://mausam.gov.in. What data you actually choose to use would depend upon the scope and extent of your project, like whether it covers the whole country or a particular state, etc.

Dear Sir,
I require daily temperature records (min, max, mean) for New Delhi for the year 2008 for a research project on estimating economic activity in India.
I’m also using U.S. MODIS ‘Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity’ data for 2008 from https://lpdaac.usgs.gov
If you could also advice me on whether these two temperature measurements are even comparable from the point of view of the technology used to capture each, that’ll be great help.
Kindly help.

Dear Mayuri,
Please visit the IMD web site at http://www.imd.gov.in/section/climate/climatescroll.htm for Delhi data.
Satellite retrievals are not directly comparable with measurements made on ground, primarily because the surface emissivity is not precisely known, unlike over the sea where it can be assumed to be 100 %.

I’ve been looking for snow precipitation data for Indian cities/districts for any one year, without much success. The IMD website and most other portals give rainfall stats. But I cant find snowfall data anywhere on the web.

Thanks,

Jun 22, 2011 @ 12:18:20
Sir,
I’m working on a paper relating satellite observed data with economic activity, like I mentioned before. Its been observed that snow-covered areas reflect more light which is captured in the satellite images, and hence need to be corrected for, before any economic estimations can be done.
I’m getting good results for the rest of India, except for the north-eastern states and mountain states of India. Therefore, I need to investigate if it is the effect of snow that is leading to these errors.

Respected Sir,
Thanks for your suggestions. I have to visit Alipur frequently and I also discussed with the scientists. They also informed me that IMD, Pune has brought out the book. But, it is not available in Kolkata, IMD office. Hope it will be available at Pune. Is the book available for us? Can you give any source name for getting the book ( shops)?

Sep 04, 2010 @ 12:18:28
Dear Asis,
I suggest that you visit the Regional Meteorological Centre, IMD, Alipore, Kolkata, and discuss your problem with the scientists there, if it is possible for you to do so. The India Meteorological Department, Pune, has very recently brought out a publication entitled “Solar Radiant Energy over India” (876 pp.). You may like to acquire it for yourself or consult it in the IMD Alipore library. It may contain the information that you are looking for.
I do not think that it is a good idea to try to derive bright sunshine hours from temperature as the relationship between them is not straightforward. Sunshine is more a function of cloudiness than temperature.
Wishing you good luck in your project,
Sincerely,
Kelkar
Sep 03, 2010 @ 19:49:49
Sir,
Can you suggest any book or any source from which I can get the bright sunshine hour data. is there published method for calculating bright sunshine hour data from temperature data?

Dear sir,
i have to do some experiments at lower humidity range, so i am looking for the min. relative humidity condition of the atmosphere. So, i need a relative humidity data report of Kanpur city thorough out the year.
So can you give me your valuable suggession. As i need to carry out expt. at RH 10 , so its better to do this when atmosphere RH is at min. level so that i can easily drop the RH of our set up using Si-gel. Though i searched NET for getting data but there’s no specific data available for Kanpur, only i get a rough idea.

respected sir
i want monthtely avarage wind speed of whole year of pune, maharashtra ,and it is really urgent for me so , can you give me any direct download link by which i can get wind data of pune city.
Jan 18, 2010 @ 15:30:20
Dear Vikrant,
I have already replied to your earlier comment. Did you do what I had suggested?
Since you are studying in the College of Engineering Pune, and since you are in such a great hurry, why don’t you just walk across to the IMD Office at Pune (Simla Office). Meet some one at the National Data Centre (NDC) or go the Library and I am sure you will get what you want.
Don’t expect everything in life to be delivered to you at your computer terminal. There is a physical world beyond the internet and you should try to explore it.

Dear Professor,
As I mentioned earlier, I am trying to analyze the AERONET measurements data for Jaipur and Kanpur sites to correlate between Aerosol optical depth, angstrom exponent and water vapor. However, am planning to do beyond just observational analysis and wanted to ask for your suggestions. I am looking to identify a problem first and then go about it. It would be great if you could suggest few problems that I could work on dealing with aerosol optical depth.
Thank You

I was actually looking for temperatures, relative humidity and wind speeds in specific for all the days in a month in year 2009. I have already looked at the link you forwarded and I did not find the required information. Also, in the Indian Meteorology website, I managed to find only the current day data and not the previous days data. Is it possible to get the historical data for all days?

Dear Akriti,
Thanks for visiting my blog. I would like to clarify that I do not provide any data through my blog. I am a retired person and I write about various topics in my blog that may be of interest to different people.
The India Meteorological Department is the official agency that provides meteorological data to users like you. However, mostly current data is available online. I suggest that you send an email to National Data Centre, IMD, Pune at ndc@imdpune.gov.in and let them know about what exactly you would like to have. I am sure that they would be able to help.
Regards and best of luck for your endeavour,
