India Climate Data

My blog statistics have revealed that many viewers have reached my site in search of climate data for Indian stations. The best way to get this information is to visit the official web site of the India Meteorological Department at www.imdpune.gov.in, and click on the link “Supply of Climate Data”. There are other links that will tell you about publications and data on sale. Data recorded by Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) are available at the site http://www.imdaws.com/ If you need further clarifications you may send an E mail to adgmr@imd.gov.in .

        Respected Sir,

Actually I am designing an energy storage system for small solar panel setup(10*10) i am estimating the solar power output for the clear sky and comparing the actual power output when it is not the clear sky. i need to answer the question like what is the probability that at this time of the day, the power output is less than 75% of the expected clear-sky power output?
so i wrote a code that it is using cloud fraction but as of now i am giving the static values for the different time in a day like at 9am it is 0.1 and so on.i need to measure cloud fraction for the specific time in the day is it possible to get it through matlab.

        Dear Sir,
Presently, My task is to identify the zones of groundwater potential and to know about the sunshine hours of that zones. I have identified the groundwater potential zones in my research area. Now I have to suggests the locations where the solar pumps of definite capacity could be installed for pumping out the groundwater, for this I need sunshine hours data. I have already contacted IMD for this, but they do not have any station in my study area.

Sir, I have gone through the below mentioned link of NASA where various data such as solar insolation data, Top of atmosphere insolation data and many more are given but what i need is sunshine hour data. Please open the below mentioned link and see the parameters uploaded and try to find, is there any parameter available by which one could calculate the sunshine hour.

    Sir,
I am doing my P.hd in architecture from Bhopal. I have two questions related to getting authentic weather data for my research work.

    1. In many of your replies you have suggested going to one website named ‘tutiempo.net’. I just wanted to know, how authentic is the data from this website.? Can we use the weather data from this website for research work?

    2. There is another popular website named ‘accuweather.com’. Can we use the data from this website for research work. Is it as authentic as ‘tutiempo.net’ or should we only go to IMD pune-http://www.imdpune.gov.in/ for authentic data.

Kindly pls. clarify these above queries. I would be grateful to you.

      Dear Naveen,
Thanks for raising an important question. Different types of people visit my site and I advise them differently. Some of them are students who somehow want to complete a little project. Some people are impatient and in a great hurry, wanting all data instantly online. Then there are other researchers who want data which is not even recorded!
The answer to your question is that only data made available by the IMD National Data Centre at Pune is guaranteed to be authentic. That is why it takes time to get it and may even cost some money. With other sites, you can take a chance, or subject their data to your own quality control.

    Hello sir,

I am a research assistant in IIT Bombay. For my project, I need climate data like rainfall, temperature etc. for Mumbai Metropolitan Region for last 20-30 years in as much detail as possible. On the IMD website, I have found different sources to obtain this data, but which would be most appropriate that has left me confused. The cost difference between these options is also large.
    There is:
    1. Climatological Normals for 1981-2010 http://www.imdpune.gov.in/advts/climate_normals_1981-2010.pdf,
    2. separate rainfall & temperature data as given here – http://www.imdpune.gov.in/publication/E_%20Products%20of%20NCC.pdf
    3. Data provided by NDC in the form of surface, autographic and so on.

I would like your guidance on which data would be appropriate.

      Dear Sayali,
I visited your blog and found that you are a sensitive poet as well..!!
But about your data requirement, let me offer the following suggestions:
      1. There is a site http://en.tutiempo.net/climate/01-2014/ws-430030.html where you can download monthly and daily data for Bombay and many other Indian stations online for free. Have a look.
      2. I think (I am not sure) that IIT Bombay has a MoU with IMD under which you should be able to claim free access to data. Find out more about this MoU if you can.
      3. Since you are in Bombay and your project pertains to MMR, you should contact the Regional Meteorological Centre at Colaba and possibly meet the Head, Dr K N Hosalikar. He will give you the best advice in the matter.
Best wishes for your project and poetry,

      Dear Swapnil,
What you need For your design considerations is a wind rose. It gives the frequency distribution of wind speed and direction over a given period. I could not find any wind rose for Indore, but there is one for Bhopal, which you can use as a close approximation. The link is http://www.imdagrimet.gov.in/node/1073
You will see for yourself that there is a strong westerly wind during the monsoon months from May to September. At other times of the year, the wind is generally northeasterly, but it is also light and variable, so it does not really matter.
I suggest that for your architectural design, you assume a westerly wind, which means a wind that blows from west to east.

    Dear Sir,
I’m a research scholar at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. For my research purposes i need annual weather information of year 2013-14. The parameters are average temperature, total precipitation, total relative humidity, average radiation, altitude, latitude and longitude of 27 district of UK(Dehradun and Roorkee), UP(bareily, rampur, lucknow, aligarh, allahabad, varanasi, ghazipur mirzapur, sonebhadra, gonda, basti, faizabad, siddharth nahgar, maharajganj and gorakhpur), Bihar(Patna, gaya and bhagalpur), Jharkhand(Dhanbad, ranchi), WB(asansol) and Orrisa(Raurkela, cuttak and puri). I would be pleased and highly thankful to you if you provide me the required meteorological data or appropriate link for this. Thank you!

Sir, Thanks for your response. I am working on “prospecting impact of climate change scenario in arid western Rajasthan” (also trying to find impact of drought on dust storms and how it is or will accentuate desertification). Initially, I looked for district level data. I understand very well that in our country it will be mirage to look for tehsil level climate data that is required for a detailed study. I would urge you to suggest methods to extrapolate data (like dust storms, precipitation and temperature) Even long-term district level data are also not available easily and one has to search vigorously.

Hello Sir, I was just listening to a story on BBC America about the Indian water crisis. Many people waiting in lines for daily water supply, ATM water dispensers, poor water quality from pipes to rivers. It saddens me to think that in a country known for its monsoons and flooding that there should be any kind of water crisis. India’s largest source of water is not pumped from underground or flows from a pipe, it falls freely from the sky.
There must be a way of water harvesting rainfall on a massive scale. Here we have rain barrels that collect runoff from roofs to water our gardens. A simple cheese cloth to filter out the bugs and debris. I use a 55 gallon plastic drum with PVC plastic fitting. Connect a series of those together and you could collect thousands of gallons of water. 😉

Let me explain what I wrote. When you want to go flying to a place, don’t you first know that it has an airport? If you are going to a village, would you find its name on an air booking web site?
Now similarly, if you are writing a thesis on the solar radiation at Salem, should you not care to find out if the data is indeed being recorded there? How would you get a link to something that does not exist?

      Dear Mr Garg,
Your requirement is very vague. Do you want district averages or data for individual stations within districts? Do you want current realtime data or archived data? If archived, for how many years? Hourly, daily, weekly?
How long will you be in the Netherlands? By the time you collect all the data, your course may even be over!
There have been many hydrometeorological studies of river basins of India. Please consult them also.

Currently we focus on yercaud Mountains of Tamilnadu, Kil kotagiri of Nilgiris,
Kuppam of AP, Nananjgod & Chamraj Nagara of Karnataka, Udaipur of Rajasthan ( closer to Mt.Abu). studying the possibilities in Nasik,Jammu,Samba & Kathua areas.
Our challenges are basically extreme Heat of above 42 degree C in APRIL-JUNE where flowering initiates and in cooler zones where its lesser than 32, the rainfall is very high over 1200 mm-1500 mm which is of higher side.

      Dear Anu,
Daily data for 50 years works out to 365 x 50 = 18250 days. Multiply by the number of metros. I assume here that you need daily average temperature. If you need for every hour during the day, then multiply by another 24. Surely, IMD would levy a processing fee for so much data. Do you have a plan for using such a large volume of data? You are only doing an M Tech and not a Ph D. So be practical, I would say. Ask only what you really need and can really use. If you ask for less, you may get it free!

I hope you realize that designing an airport is not child’s play. You have not told me where you are based, but I suggest that you visit Patarpur and find out things for yourself, rather than expect all data to be downloaded to your computer.
The type of wind data that you need for an airport design will not be available on any web site because nobody wants it, except a few people like you. You may give a Google search for “Delhi wind rose”, whereby you may stumble upon some useful information.

        Dear Aman,
If there is already a non-operational airport at Partapur, the wind data should be available there itself and you can collect it. You can at least find out the alignment of the runway there. That should help you. Otherwise you can use the available wind data for Meerut or even Delhi for your design studies.

I am researching the effective usage of a new cooling system in Delhi. For this, I will require hourly temperature data of Delhi for 365 days. Any year will work, recent is preferred. I could not find such detailed hourly data on IMD or any other site. Could you please suggest if IMD can provide and how much will it charge, and approximately how long will it take?

I would like to caution you, however, that IMD may not have stations all over your region of interest if you are looking for actual field data.

Apart from the 14 stations which receive 5000 mm rainfall, i have done
research which took me nearly 3-4 weeks to obtain authenticated data from various sources to see whether other places that receive 5000 mm apart from IMD’s 14 places and in the process have uploaded the state wise rainfall record holders. This report will be updated often and popped up as soon as i get more data from public.

Sir, I am glad I found your blog. Is there any chance that I will find a long term (say 30 years) precipitation data of any catchment, along with the runoff data at its outlet? I am doing rainfall-runoff modelling using Artificial Neural Networks.

      Dear Sagar,
Yours is a very specific research requirement and I am afraid that the data that you need will not be available online on a single web site. I suggest that you acquire the data from IMD and CWC directly. You will have to be clear about what catchments you are interested in and for which stations you want the rainfall data.

    Dear Sir,
I am Ishita Jain and I am a 2nd year architecture student. We have Climate studio this semester where i have to design a vocational centre for women in Leh, Ladakh. The program that i narrowed down was soil preservation through plantation. the site that we have been given is a stepped site. where the distance between the lowest and highest point is six mtrs. hence i figured i could use the concept of terrace farming and at the same time plantation, strategic cutting of the trees and then using the wood for their traditional carpentry and vernacular architecture too.

wud u help me with the kind of trees i shud look for planting and also where cud i find the sun path diagram of leh? what are the major things i shud be careful about while designing?

      Dear Ishita,
I believe you are aware that Ladakh is a cold desert.
How much water will be available at your site and what will be its source? That will decide what can be grown there.
What will be the temperature at your site? That will be the most important factor for your design.
By the way, where are you based?

i have researched but i cudnt find a wind direction which i can consider for through out year for the specific area. in weather forecast sites.. wind direction are shown different by every season.. so how do i decide which wind direction should be considered for architectural purposes..

      Dear Aditi,

I appreciate your problem. Wind directions in the monsoon region are bound to change with season. That is characteristic of monsoon winds. But we cannot design architectural structures that can change with season. However, there are many solutions to your problem.

If you are designing a large structure like a bungalow or a building, you can have different designs for rooms facing different directions. For example, if you have several bedrooms in a bungalow, people can use different rooms in different seasons and take advantage of the winds in that season. Same applies to office rooms in a huge building, the airconditioning can be optimally designed as per different prevailing wind for different rooms. Not all of them need to be used all through the year.

The second option is to use the most likely wind direction in the course of the year, which may be westerly or northerly for most of MP. Or use the average for the whole year, that may be northwesterly. Then you can design a structure that suits the average wind. But the overall design performance will always be sub-optimum.

Please understand that I am a meteorologist and I know little about architecture. This is just commonsense based advice.

        Sir,
Thank you so much for the information and your opininon. I totally agree with you that India has no place with year-round snowfall and/or power outage due to heavy snowfall. That is why we are looking for places like norway, morgan etc where severe power outage due to heavy snowfall alone occurs, but it is becoming very difficult to avail power outage data from these places. Could you suggest a way to get reliable data of these foreign places.
And sir, I would like to congratulate you for your wonderful blog which is a great help for thousands of people around.

        Dear Tanaya,
Thanks. I am going to close this correspondence with the following comments:
Even in Europe and America, it does not snow all year round, but only in winter. Accumulated snow is not a cause of power outages. Power gets disrupted only in snowstorms. Otherwise life there remains normal.
I do not know of sites where power outage data is available online. But Google is always there. “Seek and you will find”, is what Jesus said 2000 years ago. And that is how research is to be done.
Best wishes, and I wish that you complete your project!

Actually, I am a third year electrical engineering student in NIT silchar, and we are doing a research work on the reliability model of electrical distribution system subject to severe weather conditions. We want the electrical power outage data of a place that experiences snowfall almost round the year. The US countries keep record of power outage, but am not sure about India since we didnt get any informmation in the internet. Could you plz suggest where can we find the power outage statistics of the last few years of any snow clad city of India like Leh, Jammu, or Shimla ? Kindly help.

        Nov 19, 2011 @ 02:08:13

        Dear Tanaya,
Thank you for telling me more about you. First I had thought that you were based in the US.
Although our country has to face many kinds of adverse weather, you must understand that we have more problems not related to the weather. Power outages are so common even when the weather is fine. Severe thunderstorms are the main cause of concern, because of (i) lightning and (ii) squally winds as power lines are damaged by falling trees. Of course there are the occasional tropical cyclones in the coastal belts in which electric poles themselves fall.
Contrary to what you expect, snowfall does not occur anywhere throughout the year, but only in winter. The accumulated winter snow may however remain in parts of summer.
The power outage records should be available with the power distribution companies. You may have to visit one of their field offices and collect the data manually. Since you are in Silchar, you could consider going to Darjeeling or Gangtok and do a local investigation.
        Best wishes,

It may not be available on web sites. I suggest that you get in touch with the Meteorological Centre, Dehra Dun, and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehra Dun, for the data that you need. It would be worthwhile for you to visit these institutes, discuss your problem with the scientists there and seek their guidance on using GIS techniques. Dear Prof. R. R. Kelkar,

I am writing in regards to rainfall/surface data and am hoping you can point me towards the right direction.

I spoke with Dr. Kumar of the IMD Pune Institute in regards to having access to this data at the daily/station level from 1 May to 17 July 2011.
He kindly explained to me that they only release historical records, not recent records. However, I have seen current data on other websites such as tutiempo.net, but I am concerned about using this data as it is not clear what its source is.

I have also checked two more websites: http://www.imdaws.com/ (suggest by Ashok Jaswal in a post below), and http://mausam.gov.in/WEBIMD/ClimatologicalAction.do?function=getStationDetails&actionParam=1&param=2&station=Panjim (suggested by you in another post).
However, I was not able to find the information for this year.

    My question for you:
    1) Would you be able to recommend another site which has reliable rainfall/surface data (ideally supplied by the IMD stations) for 2011?

I have recently returned from 2 months of work in India and would like to try to match the data I collected with the rainfal/surface data so any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Renata L.

From what I have seen, the data is very sporadic, and has not be well documented. I am not sure if that is really the case, or is it that I have not looked at the right place. Could you please guide me in this matter as well?

You’re welcome. You may visit the web site of the Central Water Commission, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India at http://www.cwc.nic.in
You would have to browse through it and you may perhaps find something useful to you under ‘Reservoir Storage’. If not, you will at least get contact information that may lead you further on to the actual data source.

      Dear Shreyasee,
It was nice to know about you and your work. The monthly rainfall data for the years 1901-2000 for 110 stations in India is readily available on the IMD web site at http://www.imd.gov.in/section/nhac/mean/110_new.htm. But if you need more data I suggest that you send a mail to the National Data Centre of IMD at Pune to ndc@imdpune.gov.in. When you write to NDC, you should clarify whether you need district averages or station level data within districts. You may also specify the names of the districts you are interested in or whether you need data for all the districts.

Here I am giving abstract of a recent study on surface wind speed over India.

Climatology and trends in near-surface wind speed over India during 1961-2008
      by A. K. JASWAL and A. L. KOPPAR
India Meteorological Department, Shivajinagar, Pune – 411 005
      Abstract
This study analyses near-surface wind speed changes in India during 1961 to 2008. Consisting of monthly wind speed data of 171 stations, the results show that most of the stations in India have experienced significant weakening of wind speed, both at monthly and annual timescales. All-India averaged annual mean wind speed has decreased from 9.7 kmph in 1961 to 5.0 kmph in 2008 resulting in a 49% decline. Averaged rate of decrease in annual mean wind speed is -0.88 kmph/decade. The largest rate of decline is in June (-1.33 kmph per decade) and the smallest is in October (-0.60 kmph per decade). Spatially, large declines are found in western India, south peninsula and the coastal areas while central, southeast and northeast India have the lesser change in wind speed. Significant weakening of wind speed has occurred primarily in regions along Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, north Karnataka, and coastal Orissa and West Bengal which also have higher annual mean wind speed. Annual mean wind speeds exceeding 15 kmph are observed only over Gujarat and south Tamil Nadu. Some parts of Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, north Karnataka and adjoining Andhra Pradesh and the coastal belts experience wind speeds of 10-15 kmph. Stations having annual mean wind speed exceeding 10 kmph are rare in northern India.
The study evaluates climatology of winds and its long-term trends over India where wind power can be profitably utilised. The prominent regions are in Gujarat and adjoining Madhya Pradesh, south Rajasthan, north Maharashtra, north Karnataka, south Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh and along the west coast from Gujarat to Goa and along the east coast from Kolkata to Nagapatinam.

    Dear Sir,

This is great help even to go though your blog and the information written in it. I’m student of environmental architecture studies and currently doing one of the environmental landscape designing project in region called Wada Taluka in Thane District. I’m looking for data related to climate, biodiversity & Eco systems available in this region.

I visited the websites mentioned in previous blogs but couldn’t find any. Also spoke to officer in Indian Meteorological Department Pune, but found that there is no Thane station covered. In this case, how can I collect the information related to this area.

Kindly guide me in this regards.

    Thanking you.

      Dear Prashant,
I understand your problem, but there is no easy solution. There are so many places in the country where meteorological observatories were not set up because there was no need in the past and so there is no authentic climate record available. The best you can do is interpolate the data between stations around Thane. Rainfall data may be available for Thane proper. Did you check? Also, did you see the “District Gazeteer” for Thane,? It may have some information. You may be able to refer to it in a good library. Otherwise you will have to do some original research like looking through old files or records of hospitals, railways, agricultural and revenue officials, but that is going to be very time consuming and difficult.
      Best of luck anyway,

    Dear Sir,
I am trying to find a correlation between the temperature and power demand in the state of Maharashtra. This would be used to project the demand of the state more accurately based on temperature projections.

Would it be possible to get some past data regarding the forecast made by IMD and the actual temperature for the past 8-10 years. What would be the overall accuracy of the projections by IMD?

Thanks in advance for your help.

      Dear Anoop,

You will have to more specific. Are you studying the whole state of Maharashtra or some parts of it? Which parts? How many days in advance do you need temperature forecasts? On what spatial resolution? Are you more concerned about maximum temperature? Or is it daily mean temperature? Are you interested in summer particularly? If you can narrow down your requirements in clear terms, it will be much easier for me to help you in your search for data.

Can we correlate the disappearance of Aral sea with Indian monsoon?

    Reply

    • Prof R R Kelkar
      Dec 21, 2010 @ 10:34:35

      Dear Vartika,

The Aral Sea is located far northwest of the Indian region to affect the monsoon. The shrinking of the Aral Sea, which is really a lake, due to human intervention in the hydrology of the region, started as far back in 1960. There is no evidence of a change in the Indian monsoon rainfall over this period. However, a statistical correlation does exist between the Indian monsoon rainfall and large scale Eurasian snow cover and soil moisture.

You have not indicated the nature of your interest in the problem. So I suggest that you read the paper “On the relationship between the Indian summer monsoon and river flow in the Aral Sea basin”, by Schiemann et al published in Geophysical Research Letters, 2007, or other similar articles which are available on the internet. You may search for them on Google Scholar.

Thank u for your response. I’m basically not an expert in subject. The modelling software that we are using is ISC-Aeromod view by lakes Int. Canada. As far as i understood, ceiling height is referred as the height of the cloud base and as per the u.s e.p.a, when opaque cloud cover is less than 5, it can be assumed as unlimited. So i think it is basically the height of the cloud base. Mixing height is a separate parameter and even though it is missing, there are options for estimating it in the soft ware itself

        thanks and regards

        Nov 01, 2010 @ 14:54:36

        Dear Vivek,

The height of the cloud base is usually recorded by an instrument called a ceilometer or estimated manually at airports as it is required for aviation purposes. You will have to inquire at the Cochin airport if they have such data and if they can give it you in the format you desire.

For most of the data it adds up. But only for some the annual rainfall is more than what we get after adding up all the monthly rainfall. Is it O.K?
If we want to calculate annual rainfall, the value mentioned can be directly taken?or we have to add up all the monthly rainfall? How the annual rainfall is calculated?
is it just adding up the monthly rainfall? If yes, why iit is different then?

Thank you for visiting my site. Your problem could be due to a variety of reasons, such as rounding off of decimals, quality control of data and so on. You should, really speaking, ask the data supplier about it. But since you have written to me, please tell me what is the order of magnitude of the difference between the annual rainfall and the sum of the monthly rainfall values. If possible, send me the data as an excel or word file and I can ask examine it. Since you are dealing with just one station, the file should be small. My email id is kelkar_rr@yahoo.com. Maybe I can figure out the cause of the discrepancy.

    Respected Sir,
One of my students is asking if the in coming solar radiation is diverted into space by using proper apparatus [mirrors / filters] at a given place will it be possible to reduce the surface air temperature at that place.

      Dear Mr Kaneyen,

Thank you for your comment, which is as you say a question posed by your student.

Yes, if the incoming solar radiation over a place decreases, the surface air temperature also decreases. That is why higher latitudes are cooler than the tropics. We often experience that when a thick cloud develops in the afternoon, the maximum temperature gets reduced. However, there is a question of scale. Even large reflectors would be very tiny compared to a cloud and would not be of help. Further, the surface air temperature is the result of not just the incoming solar radiation, but also the atmospheric radiation from above and the terrestrial radiation from below. The problem is therefore not that simple. On a very small scale, and where the environment is insulated like a room or a car, sun screens on window glasses do help to keep out the direct heat of the sunshine and lower the temperature.

If your student has more questions, I will be happy to discuss them.

      Regards,

      Sincerely,

      R R Kelkar

    Dear Sir,
How useful is monsoon prediction if it is not accurate enough to predict rainfall on MY piece of land? It appears to be impossible to predict that. General forecast that it will rain sporadically in western maharashtra has little meaning to me as a farmer.

      Dear Dr Sharangpani,

Your question has two aspects, philosophical and technical. If we could predict our future lives in every detail, by whatever means, we would become God. As human beings, we are subject to many limitations and constraints. At the same time, everyone wants to know the future, although it is not his hands. This is all paradoxical and can be frustrating.

As far the technical aspect is concerned, there are two types of situations. One in which the weather conditions over a widespread area are very similar. In such a situation it makes sense to say that it will rain over that area, and an individual farmer will benefit from that information because his farm lies within it. But there are times when the weather is not uniform over a region and it could differ from one farm to another. In that case the forecast may come true over some farms but not over others. It becomes more and more difficult to make good weather predictions as the area becomes smaller and the time period becomes longer.

What I would say is that weather predictions have to be considered along with other information and guidance available, including the farmer’s traditional knowledge and intuition and his deep understanding of local conditions.

Does this make sense to you? If not, write to me again.

      Regards and best wishes,

We are trying to plant crops in pairs so that we should be able to get some crops whatever the rainfall.
We feel rather than spending time on predicting rain we should make the best use of whatever rain fall on my plot of land.
        Thanking you,
        Yours sincerely,

      Dear Jahnabi,

Please visit the site http://www.imd.gov.in. In the middle of the home page, you will find a dialogue box ‘Select station for climatological information’. Here you will get a dropdown list. Choose the station you want.

The IMD web site provides a lot of other information, some of which may also be of interest to you.

        Dear Sir,

I am graduate student from Illinois USA. My present research focuses on developing a appropriate rain model for satellite communication in India. Right now we are looking in to a method of obtaining rain height in India. Can you please share any idea that would probably help us to start with. i have pretty good gridded data from NASA TRMM but not appropriate for my purpose. I heard that radiosonde observation will help me get there. Can you please share if there’s any other method to derive rain height and place to get radiosonde observations. Thank you.
