Kelkar Book Climate Change

Prof R R Kelkar’s third book, “Climate Change: A Holistic View”, was released on 31 August 2010 by Prof U R Rao in the presence of Dr R Chidambaram, Dr Shailesh Nayak and Prof B N Goswami at the Second National Workshop on Advances in the Science of Climate Change held at Pune.

Climate change has many aspects which have to be understood and considered in their totality and not in isolation. The science of climate change considers the observational evidence, attempts to model the processes within the climate system, and ventures to make projections and predictions of climate over the next century or longer. Climate change has a major political angle, because when developed and developing countries come together to discuss it, the past history of exploitation comes into conflict with the hopes for a better future. Economics also comes into the picture as unabated climate change is sure to harm national economies, while mitigation actions have their own costs. There are ethical issues as well, as the entire human society will be affected by climate change, and there has to be a deep consideration of whether our actions are right or wrong, just or unjust, good or bad. Prof Kelkar’s new book takes a holistic view of such different aspects of climate change with special reference to India.

The book has seven chapters:

  1. Evidence of climate change
  2. Climate monitoring
  3. Climate modelling and prediction
  4. Impacts on glaciers, sea level and tropical cyclones
  5. Impacts on monsoon, agriculture and human health
  6. Politics and economics of climate change
  7. Preparing for the future

The book can serve as a textbook for university courses in atmospheric and environmental sciences, as a source of reference for scientists and research workers and as a storehouse of authentic information for all others interested in climate change.

    Respected Dr. Kelkar,
Most humbly I would venture to put a question that will not the climate change itself be there to affect the state of health of the people of india as well as those in the rest of the planet along with the food security? your tone very much reflects that of the global warming sceptics.
    with regards,

      Dear Mr Samarasekhara,

Thank you very much for your comment. Let me say that what I have put on my blog is only the preface. I hope you will read the book itself after it is released, which will be very soon. My aim in writing my book is neither to project a skeptic’s view of climate change nor that of a climate change enthusiast, but a balanced holistic view.
