India Weather Data

My blog statistics have revealed that many viewers have reached my site in search of weather data for Indian stations. The best way to get this information is to visit the official web site of the India Meteorological Department at www.imd.gov.in and then choose from a variety of links available on the home page. Under “City Weather” stationwise observations of maximum temperature, minimum temperature and 24-hour rainfall, departures from normal, times of sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset, and the local forecast, would be displayed. The IMD web site offers online plenty of information of climatological as well as current interest.

Sir, I’ve been able to convert the precipitation and temperature data from IMD to stata format. However, the time variable when formatted to %td is showing 2059 instead of the real year 2000 and 2080 for the year 2021. What can be done to rectify this?

Also for the years 2005-2010, I’m not able to format the time at all.. The lapsed time since 1960 jan1 which is what stata uses is not correct when I convert data from Netcdf format to dta. What can be done?

      Dear Sarah,
      Thanks for visiting my site.
I am sorry to know that you have encountered problems while converting data that you have apparently got from IMD. I suggest that you contact Dr O P Sreejith of IMD Pune and seek his help. His email id’s are sreejith.op@gmail.com and op.sreejith@imd.gov.in. You may give my reference if you like.

    Prof Kelkar,
I have a few questions and am hopeful that you can help me with.
    1. For creation of global data sets as inputs to WMO for NWP, India shares what kind of information? Are they by and large coming from their Synoptic met stations?
    2. How effective are the data collection from the AWS?. Is this data also shared with WMO?
    3. The data from AWS are different in terms of averaging periods, frequency (how many data points per day etc). A paper from Mr.Ranalkar says the anemometers used in AWS have an accuracyof 1.2 m/s. I just hope it is a typo.
    4. Data recovery rates from AWS, how good is it in general?
    5. Is ‘Nowcasting’ more of a qualitative analysis or can one take the results as sacrosanct? I mean, what may be uncertainties associated with the numbers?
    6. What kind of quantitative validation exists for the results obtained?
    7. Who are the experts within the country apart from you on these aspects? Hope to hear from you.
Many questions I know, you are one Master who will know all the answers correctly. Hope I am no t intruding.

Agromet data is usually recorded for specific purposes or in a research mode and is therefore not routinely published on web sites. Daily weather data can be found on sites like tutiempo.in or aws.imd.gov.in. You have not revealed where you are working, but it will be helpful to get in touch with scientists working at the agricultural university in Anand. They may have more information.

      Dear Arup,
Thank you for visiting my site. Of course, during the rainy season, the sky will be much more cloudy than in other months. But instead of taking a roundabout way of first getting cloud cover data and then estimating solar radiation, I suggest that you work with solar radiation data directly. You may like to visit the sites below on which solar data is available for whole of India in map form.
      https://mnre.gov.in/india-solar-resource-maps
      https://www.nrel.gov/international/ra_india.html
From the maps you can interpolate for your location.

      Dear Ashok,
The incoming solar radiation in a clear sky situation can be computed from the sun-earth geometry. There are algorithms available om the internet which you can download and use for this purpose. If your AWS makes cloudiness measurements, you can also use the cloud data and make a reasonable assessment of the solar radiation.
Alternatively, you can compare your measurements with those of nearby AWS stations or IMD radiation stations.

Sir, the world weather online provides the data for temperatures of almost all places (because the IMD has data only for selected stations. This data however is perhaps based on the andriod version (some projections or similar, without the actual measurements). Infact I require the daily temperature of 5 different locations at varying altitudes in the darjeeling hills for the year 2015 where there are no monitoring stations. I however measured the outdoor max and min temperature and RH for 1 locations in the year 2015. Using it I tried interpolate the others as per the Lapse Rate.
Is my approach acceptable for a research purpose?

      Dear Samar,
No, the lapse rate is related to the free atmosphere. Temperature at different heights in the Darjeeling area may be governed by several local factors like winds, sunshine, clouds, etc. which you do not know.

    Dear Prof.Kelkar,

We are in need of temperature data by no. of hours in a year. For e.g. 32 degrees C prevailed for say 100 hrs in a year, 31 degrees for 50 hrs in a particular city etc. Where can we get this data? This is to calculate exactly for how many hours a chiller may be required to run for cooling a ‘water-cooled’ Supercomputer as for the rest of time-period, normal water can be used. We need for Pune, Delhi and any other Indian Metros if available.

      Dear Manish,
I do not know your background and your domain name is Russian so I do not know where you are. But I think you should try a more elegant method of doing this analysis. I suggest that you get only the daily maximum and minimum temperatures (which are easily available) and fit a diurnal variation curve and then just read off the threshold values or get the respective areas under the curve.
Otherwise you will have to ask IMD to supply you the hourly data.

      Dear Rukmini,
Weather data are recorded the world over at the same time so that they can be plotted on a chart. It is a standard practice to record observations at 00 GMt and 12 GMT (or 5:30 and 17:30 IST).
In India the times 08:30 and 17:30 IST are convenient because of daylight and also because minimum and maximum temperatures can be read from the thermometers.

    Respected Sir,

Websites displaying data on sunrise and sunset times show differences in figures for the same date and time. My questions are:

    a) Is there any authentic website for Kharagpur, West Bengal?
    b) I tried to cross check the data for two websites on google………..at one particular sunset time (time given by one website), the sky was blue and at another time given by another site 4 mins later, the sky had turned red. Is the second one more authentic? (I was not able to see the sun but only the sky from my window).

      Dear Aparna,
The most authentic site is http://www.packolkata.gov.in. There you can download the sunrise and sunset times for Kharagpur.
I would also like to clarify that these times are based on astronomical calculations and they are not dependent on sky conditions. If the sky is totally overcast, the sun cannot be seen, but surely it rises or sets!

Currently I’m in need of help to get a clarification on acquiring data with respect to my final year project which focuses on developing a tool that deals with diagnosing the best renewable resource potential option across various locations of south India. The resources under my consideration includes solar, wind and biomass and the first step towards it was in obtaining the data for solar radiation, wind speed and bio mass resource for my locations on an monthly basis for recent years. But the problem I’m prone to right now is that either I get very old data or a pictorial representation of the same which is not helping me. Henceforth I kindly request to offer your advise in directing to the right site that contains the information for my requirements.

I am doing my masters in agricultural meteorology and climatology. For my research work (agro ecological zonation at micro level using RS & GIS), I need 40 years (1973 – 2013) daily weather data for all Tamil Nadu districts at block level. Is it possible to get previous year weather data for Tamil Nadu? Kindely suggest me the web site for getting 40 years daily weather data.

An instrument used by companies to hedge against the risk of weather-related losses. The investor who sells a weather derivative agrees to bear this risk for a premium. If nothing happens, the investor makes a profit. However, if the weather turns bad, then the company who buys the derivative claims the agreed amount.

Is there a correlation between presence of windmills and the precipitation levels in that area? There are some reports from Texas and China which state that the rainfall decreases in the downwind areas. On my recent visit to Udumalpet in TN ,which has significant windmill deployment, the locals were mentioning lesser rainfall. Has anyone done this research in India? Where can we get the data for a period of 10 years to do studies in all areas having significant windmill deployment?

There was a similar scare when windmills were installed in south Maharashtra a decade back. But a scientific study was carried out and it dispelled all doubts. I do not have a copy of the report.
So I feel that you need not worry. You could still carry out your own independent study but that will be like reinventing the wheel.

Dr. Kelkar, do you know if the IMD offers data files for doppler radar data similar to that offered by the US National Weather service as seen here: http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/kmzgenerator.php I am looking to build an app for predicting rainfall and would like to access a live feed of such data if it exists.

Wind roses for some stations in India are available online at http://www.imdagrimet.gov.in/search/node/wind%20rose
However, IMD is the only source of long term data on winds. So please contact them. Mangalore has an airport, so you should be able to get the wind rose for Mangalore at least. See this site http://www.windfinder.com/windstats/windstatistic_mangalore_bajpe_airport.htm
IMD has published an atlas of wind roses which you can get on payment. See http://www.imd.gov.in/doc/advt.pdf

I want to collect cloud cover data for Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. Different websites like World Weather Online, Intellicast and Weather 2 provide different figures for the same hour and date. I do not know which one to follow. As far as my understanding goes these data are modelled and not actual observations. Am I correct? Could you please suggest me some guideline about it? Also, if I were to collect it myself, what method can I follow? Can I analyse sky photographs and do it on my own?

      Sep 28, 2013 @ 05:42:55

      Dear Aparna,
The problem is that extracting cloud cover information from satellite images is difficult. Because the satellite sees clouds from above, which is the opposite of an observer’s viewpoint. The same is the problem with cloud data extracted from models.
So what you really need is actual observations of the sky made by an observer. The cloud amount in oktas, the type of cloud, the height of the base, can only be recorded by an observer looking skyward.
Since you are at IITKGP, please find out if any of your departments has already collected such data. If not, then discuss your data needs with IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore, Kolkata.
It is also important for you to decide with what accuracy you need the data. That will make your search easy.
      Best wishes,

        Dear Ranith,
You have defined your problem quite vaguely. When you say MODIS is ‘coarse’ resolution, what is the resolution that you are going to work with? And when you say ‘long term’ how many years of satellite data would you need? And what is a ‘quality’ satellite image? If you don’t like MODIS you can use Kalpana data, for which you will have to ask IMD.

The Konkan Strip has been heating up for the past few days, Ratnagiri recording in the range of 38-39 degrees, Mumbai( S.crz) have touched 40 degrees today. On contrary interior regions like Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha have been near about normal( 33-36 range). Clearly the sea breeze( which brings a cooling effect with added humidity) in konkan is simply not setting in in-time, i.e. by late afternoon and temperatures are shooting up like anything. Any reason for this abnormal phenomenon? Is the dry North Easterly land breeze too strong over Konkan or anything else?

Thank you for your reply Sir, Btw I am a weather enthusiast and in no way related to the world of meteorology either academically or professionally. I have keenly followed the vagaries of weather for long especially over the sub-continent and weather phenomenons excite me a lot. I have another query regarding the frequency of Western Disturbances during winters. I have observed that this year WDs have been quiet frequent and strong enough to affect not only NW India but the entire stretch of Indo Gangetic plains, MP, Gujarat, Chattisgarh and Orissa. Is there any particular global phenomenon behind this and if this trend continues should there be a change in cropping patterns( for your information untimely rains/hailstorms on 11th Feb in North Maharashtra and South MP have caused widespread damage to crops).

I wish to obtain weather data- (max, min, rainfall, max and min relative humidity) for Durgapur( West Bengal). The nearest weather station available on IMD site is Panagarh IAF (around 20 Km SE of Durgapur). How much variation should we consider between the two stations to get an exact data?

      Dear Arindam,
Data recorded at two different sites will never be identical. But you can substitute one for the other depending on your application, which you have not revealed to me. Rainfall is highly variable with regard to space and time, but temperature and wind do not differ much if the topography is the same. So you can decide accordingly.

    Dear Sir,

    Greetings.

I am Surendhiran (Final year B.E. EEE) from Coimbatore Institute of Technology. As a part our project we are developing mathematical models for calculating solar irradiance for major cities in TamilNadu. As you may be aware of, last week Tamilnadu Government has announced its “Solar energy policy” in which there are solar irradiance data for each location in Tamilnadu based on the NASA climatic data collected during 2002-2008 (hour by hour). As per that data, Coimbatore has average global solar radiation of 5.290 kWhr/m2/day (455.17 calories/m2/day). But as per the data we collected from TamilNadu Agriculture University’s agroclimatic centre for the year 2008-2012, the average solar radiation of Coimbatore was around 4.31 kWhr/m2/day (385.177 calories/m2/day). Despite the difference in the timings of recording, these data seems to be deviating significantly from each other. Here I request you to comment on this issue because your view will be helpful in our modelling. I would like to know which data is likely to be more accurate.

Sir there is one more request for you,I want want to remind you that my research is both analytical and based on the historical data ,we are going to predict the crop production for a particular region with the help of the historical data related to the the crop production (MAIN FACTOR) and the factors which may affect the crop during any season ,for example temperature, humidity ,rainfall, soil fertility for that region .So sir I need the information from where to get the data (specially the soil fertility and the crop production data ).
Sir also suggest me from where to get the information that how the factors mentioned above affect the crop production simultaneously ,as we have to generate the rules out of this information that how and how much the factors affect the production. For example we can generate the rule like this: IF the temperature=normal and humidity is normal, rainfall= average THEN production=good. Please provide me any source(any link or research paper”how temperature affect the crop production ” and “how the humidity affect the production and “upto what extend the rainfall is usefull for the crop production(wheat and bajra) “) to get necessary information to create the knowledge base for the rule generation step.

I am terribly sorry if this comment comes twice because I had some problem with my connectivity and I not sure that my previous comment was posted or not(hence I repeat this again). Wind direction is not my concern as turbine head is dynamic to changes in wind direction. I think I may need to clarify my first query. The data for wind speed I have, was taken at 8.30amevery day and it is the average wind speed for the whole day. But average wind speed for the whole day(average dinural wind speed) is what I need. Is there anyway to calculate the average wind speed with the data I have?

      Dear Surendhiran,
Of all weather parameters, wind speed is the most variable. So, it cannot be extrapolated or interpolated. If you really want average for the day then you will need several observations over the 24 hour period and then take their mean.
If you want averages directly you may see this link
      http://www.tutiempo.net/en/Climate/Coimbatore_Peelamedu/2011/433210.htm
Here you will get wind data on daily, monthly and annual scales for Coimbatore, but I am not sure about the site’s authenticity.

I am doing my project on solar and wind energy hybrid systems. I have wind speed data taken at 8.30 am for every day for the past 4 years. Now I have to calculate the mean wind speed of coimbatore throughtout the year so that I can optimise my wind turbine design. I want to know is there any empirical formula for the calculation for mean wind speed from the data I have or there is any website which provides accurate mean speed data

      Aug 25, 2012 @ 00:22:45

      Dear Surendhiran,
Wind is a vector quantity, so if you have both wind speed and direction data, you should derive a vector mean. This is done by breaking every wind value into a u- and v-component, i.e. easterly and westerly component, then averaging the u- and v-components and finally combining back the average u- and v-components back to the average wind vector.
However, if you have only wind speed data, or if you are not interested in wind direction, then you can just average it over the 4 year period and get an arithmetic mean of wind speed.

Can you please provide me some information about ‘from where I can get the data?’

      Dear Kousik,
The best way to overcome your difficulty is to simulate a diurnal temperature graph. The maximum temperature is usually observed around 1430 hours and the minimum around 0730 hours local time. Using an extreme value of say 50 deg C for the maximum and a minimum of say 20 deg C you can yourself construct a smooth diurnal curve.

There are many internet sites such as http://www.fi.edu/weather/todo/todo.html which tell you how to construct simple weather instruments. However, much depends on what you want to do with them. If it is just your hobby, you can go ahead, but do not expect accurate data from such makeshift tools.

      Dear Vidhi,
Well, you cannot construct a wind rose if there is no wind data! But you have the following options:
      (1) Instead of Ooty you can choose another station (for your case study) for which data is available
      (2) Get data for stations around Ooty and interpolate
      (3) Get data for a neighbouring station and use it for Ooty with some approximations

        Dear Vijay,
I retired from IMD eight years ago and do not speak for it. But it is really impossible to put all meteorological data for a country of India’s size on a web site as the volumes are prohibitively large. However, if data is not on a web site, it does not mean that it is not available. I suggest that you get in touch with IMD at an appropriate official level.

You will find the agricultural data on the Ministry of Agriculture web site at http://agricoop.nic.in and the weather data on the IMD web sites at http://imd.gov.in and http://mausam.gov.in. Hello Prof ,

I appreciate the quick response on the data link . The data presented at the website has different hyperlinks for every hour and shows the current temperatures for all the stations . Eventhough this might be very close to what i am looking for , if there is a view by which i could access the historical hourly data for stations in the same page it would be very helpful .

        Thanks ,

    hello sir,
I am doing project on improving IMD.So I just want to know why forecasts made by IMD are not as accurate as forecasts made by some foreign countries like US,UK. What are the technical as well as management level problem faced by IMD during distribution of information or detection phase, some inherent technical problems?
I hope you will reply to this and help to guide this during the study

Thanks for your comment. I suggest that before proceeding on your project about improving others, you may do a little introspection into your own lifestyle, thinking, relationships, work, education, hobbies, interests and so on. Dear Sir,

I require daily temperature records (min, max, mean) for New Delhi for the year 2008 for a research project on estimating economic activity in India.

I’m also using U.S. MODIS ‘Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity’ data for 2008 from https://lpdaac.usgs.gov

If you could also advice me on whether these two temperature measurements are even comparable from the point of view of the technology used to capture each, that’ll be great help.

    Kindly help.

      Dear Mayuri,

Please visit the IMD web site at http://www.imd.gov.in/section/climate/climatescroll.htm for Delhi data.

Satellite retrievals are not directly comparable with measurements made on ground, primarily because the surface emissivity is not precisely known, unlike over the sea where it can be assumed to be 100 %.

I’ve been looking for snow precipitation data for Indian cities/districts for any one year, without much success. The IMD website and most other portals give rainfall stats. But I cant find snowfall data anywhere on the web.

        Sir,

I’m working on a paper relating satellite observed data with economic activity, like I mentioned before. Its been observed that snow-covered areas reflect more light which is captured in the satellite images, and hence need to be corrected for, before any economic estimations can be done.
I’m getting good results for the rest of India, except for the north-eastern states and mountain states of India. Therefore, I need to investigate if it is the effect of snow that is leading to these errors.

      Dear Asis,

I suggest that you visit the Regional Meteorological Centre, IMD, Alipore, Kolkata, and discuss your problem with the scientists there, if it is possible for you to do so. The India Meteorological Department, Pune, has very recently brought out a publication entitled “Solar Radiant Energy over India” (876 pp.). You may like to acquire it for yourself or consult it in the IMD Alipore library. It may contain the information that you are looking for.

I do not think that it is a good idea to try to derive bright sunshine hours from temperature as the relationship between them is not straightforward. Sunshine is more a function of cloudiness than temperature.

Wishing you good luck in your project,

      Sincerely,

        Dear Professor Kelkar,

I was actually looking for temperatures, relative humidity and wind speeds in specific for all the days in a month in year 2009. I have already looked at the link you forwarded and I did not find the required information. Also, in the Indian Meteorology website, I managed to find only the current day data and not the previous days data. Is it possible to get the historical data for all days?

        Thank You
        Pranav

I was looking for data as given in the following site,
        http://www.imd.gov.in/section/nhac/dynamic/current.htm
However, data for all the days is not available.

    Dear Sir

I would like to know if the temperature in Bangalore falls below 14.4 Degree C during winter. If so, for how many days (say in the last 10 years) and to what temperature. Require this data to assess the need of room heating.

    Regards
    Vasudev Murthy

      Dear Vasudev,

Try this link on the IMD web site where you may find what you are looking for.
      http://www.imd.gov.in/section/climate/bangaluru2.htm

The IMD web site imd.gov.in is a good reference site for weather and climate data. Have a look.

      Dear Akriti,

Thanks for visiting my blog. I would like to clarify that I do not provide any data through my blog. I am a retired person and I write about various topics in my blog that may be of interest to different people.

The India Meteorological Department is the official agency that provides meteorological data to users like you. However, mostly current data is available online. I suggest that you send an email to National Data Centre, IMD, Pune at ndc@imdpune.gov.in and let them know about what exactly you would like to have. I am sure that they would be able to help.

Regards and best of luck for your endeavour,

      R R Kelkar

If you are interested in rainfall data alone, then I recommend the site Monsoon On Line which you can visit through the IITM web site http://www.iitm.ernet.in.
