Many people have visited my site in search of wind rose data for Indian stations. A wind rose is a simple method of graphical representation of the frequency distribution of wind speed and direction at a given location over a certain period. Such information is useful in applications related to aviation. architecture, wind energy, air pollution, etc.
The India Meteorological Department had now brought out a publication entitled “Atlas of Wind Roses 1971-2000 Volume 1 – 0300 UTC”. based on data recorded at 180 stations in India. I am sure that many of my readers would be interested in it. It is a priced publication and details are available on the IMD web site at

Dear Mr Mukherjee,
I suggest that you contact the National Institute of Wind Energy, Chennai. They do provide numerical data for entire India. Their web page http://niwe.res.in/department_wra_nwa.php will give you the details.
Best wishes,

Yes. No doubt it is an useful publication, but unfortunately it is still incomplete since the second part has yet to be released.
It is not understood, why the publication has been divided into morning (0300 UTC-Vol I) and evening (0900 UTC-Vol II) hours. Thus if one desires to see the wind rose of any particular station, he has to procure both the Volumes,; Vol-I for 0300 UTC winds, and Vol II for evening 0900 UTC winds.
In other words, unless and until both the volumes are published and available for sale, one cannot use the publication for any station.
